This is what happens when you microwave a bar of Ivory soap.
Crazy, huh? Do ya wanna know why it does that?
Of course ya do! Well, maybe ya don't but...oh well.
This was a science experiment that I did.
All you need is a brand new bar of Ivory soap, some other brand
of soap(bar..not liquid), a plate, and a microwave.Why specifically
Ivory? I'll tell you in just a minute. Take the two
different bars of soap and put them in a tall clear glass.The Ivory
should float and the other brand should sink.But why would one
sink and not the other? Could there be air pockets in the one
that floats? Nope. So how is it floating? I'll get to that in just a
minute. Cut the Ivory soap into cubes. Place it in the middle of
the plate and put it microwave for about two minutes.
Then watch. It will start to puff up but don't let it freak
you out! If you have to, you can open the microwave for
a second.Once the two minutes are over take it out
CAREFULLY because the plate will be kinda hot.
Now you can start dancing 'cuz you got yourself
a soap souffle! But..I still haven't told you why it does this.
So NOW I will tell you why! It's actually very similar to what
happens when popcorn pops. All soap contains water both in the
form of water vapor trapped inside air bubbles
(particularly important in the case of Ivory)and water
that is caught up in the form of the soap itself.
The expanding effect is caused when the water
is heated inside the soap.It vaporizes,creating bubbles and
the heat also causes trapped air to expand.You see, the heat
makes the soap become soft. And when the soap is heated,
the molecules move quicker causing them to move farther away
from each other which then causes the soap to puff up. So..now
you know why it puffs up, but you don't know why it has to be
Ivory.Well, here's why. It was accidentally discovered in 1890
by a Procter&Gamble employee. He forgot to turn off his
mixer before he went on his lunch break so it whipped air into
the soap which makes it float. Kinda like when you put heavy
cream in a mixer and whip air into it to make whip cream.So,
now you have learned some history of Ivory soap, why it floats,
and why it expands the way it does.And you can still wash
your hands with it! WOO! Oh! And don't try other soaps in the
microwave.They will just melt and make a terrible mess for
you to clean up.
