Bet 'cha can't guess what this is!

This is what happens when you microwave a bar of Ivory soap.

Crazy, huh? Do ya wanna know why it does that?

Of course ya do! Well, maybe ya don't but...oh well.

This was a science experiment that I did.

All you need is a brand new bar of Ivory soap, some other brand

of soap(bar..not liquid), a plate, and a microwave.Why specifically

Ivory? I'll tell you in just a minute. Take the two

different bars of soap and put them in a tall clear glass.The Ivory

should float and the other brand should sink.But why would one

sink and not the other? Could there be air pockets in the one

that floats? Nope. So how is it floating? I'll get to that in just a

minute. Cut the Ivory soap into cubes. Place it in the middle of

the plate and put it microwave for about two minutes.

Then watch. It will start to puff up but don't let it freak

you out! If you have to, you can open the microwave for

a second.Once the two minutes are over take it out

CAREFULLY because the plate will be kinda hot.

Now you can start dancing 'cuz you got yourself

a soap souffle! But..I still haven't told you why it does this.

So NOW I will tell you why! It's actually very similar to what

happens when popcorn pops. All soap contains water both in the

form of water vapor trapped inside air bubbles

(particularly important in the case of Ivory)and water

that is caught up in the form of the soap itself.

The expanding effect is caused when the water

is heated inside the soap.It vaporizes,creating bubbles and

the heat also causes trapped air to expand.You see, the heat

makes the soap become soft. And when the soap is heated,

the molecules move quicker causing them to move farther away

from each other which then causes the soap to puff up. So..now

you know why it puffs up, but you don't know why it has to be

Ivory.Well, here's why. It was accidentally discovered in 1890

by a Procter&Gamble employee. He forgot to turn off his

mixer before he went on his lunch break so it whipped air into

the soap which makes it float. Kinda like when you put heavy

cream in a mixer and whip air into it to make whip cream.So,

now you have learned some history of Ivory soap, why it floats,

and why it expands the way it does.And you can still wash

your hands with it! WOO! Oh! And don't try other soaps in the

microwave.They will just melt and make a terrible mess for

you to clean up.

Locust Life Cycle

We were outside letting the dogs out and saw alocust (aka:Cicada) starting to come out of it's

shell, so I grabbed my camera and took a bunch

of pictures! I thought this one was very unique 'cuz it

was more of a bluish green and the ones I've see are usually

are bright green and/or brown.But this one was unusually pale

and bluish. Very pretty. Now before we go to the pictures, I'm

gonna give ya the scientifics of it all. Ahem...They stay

underground for 12 to 17 years (during this time they are in

nymph stage) and while they are down there

they drink liquids from tree roots. After the 12 to 17 years

are over, they climb out and find something to hold on to.

Then they start wiggling out of the old skin and get to

where about half of their body is out of the shell,

then they start shaking the rest of their way out.

Once they are little more than half way out, they lean

back and expand their wings. They do that for a while,

then once their wings are unfolded, they climb back on

the shell and dry out.When they've dried and the new

shell has hardened, they are then in adult stage. Next,

they climb a tree and go on their merry way! Later on,

they find another locust(cicada), mate, lay eggs, and die.

Kinda sad, I know...Lets get on to the little eggs, shall we?

As I was saying, those little eggs will hatch just like every

other egg and little baby locusts will crawl underground

and the whole thing starts ALL over again!

As you know we've had rain....LOTS of rain.

And if you didn't know...well...we did.

Oh! And did I mention the yard is flooded.

Ya Hoo...(sarcasm) :) .Anyway....I was outside

and I found an ARMY frogs! They were everywhere! And there's a low spot in

the yard that's completely filled with water and they'd

hop in the middle of it, float to the end, hop

out and do it all over again! Like a water slide or something.

Soooo....I decided to get some pics! Some are kinda blurry but, Oh well!

I personally love this one! Looks like he/she

is doing some kinda kung-fu thing! LOL! :D

HAPPY..um...LATE EASTER!!!

Hey! Once again, I'm late, but Happy Easter, anyway!
I was busy stuffing my face with mashed potatoes and

gravy, dressing, corn, dumplings, and roast, and biscuits
and....Sorry.....got a little carried away there! ;D
And ya know after all the eating...you need to relax.
Which was a great time to realize what Jesus has done
for us by dying on the cross and paying for our sins.
The TRUE meaning of Easter! Anyway....Hope everyone
had an AWESOME Easter!

The Visitor

We had a little unexpected visitor.

I was beginning to think he/she was

stuck up there, but it 

finally got down . Just thought it was unusual

to see a racoon (or "coon" if your from my neck of the woods ;D) in broad daylight.
